HISTORY
OF POSITIVE CONNECTIONS
The Center for Positive Connections
(T.C.P.C.) is a 501-c(3) non-profit, grassroots organization founded
in August, 1995 by its founder Sheri Kaplan, as a direct result
of her own HIV diagnosis.
Originally its services were
limited to organizing a monthly social event for heterosexuals living
with HIV/AIDS. As membership increased, the demand and need to expand
became apparent. In February, 1996, APP Pharmacy donated (for the
1st year) an 800 square foot office space in North Miami, providing
T.C.P.C. with a permanent location. As the organization has grown,
we have added many new and vitally important services not provided
by other A.S.O’s, for the HIV/AIDS infected and affected community.
T.C.P.C. offers an environment of security and acceptance so that
we may connect with each other and access important fountains of
information and education to help us take charge of our lives, our
care and our FUTURE.
Florida, has one of the largest
reported numbers of AIDS cases. The numbers
are staggering & still growing. These statistics do not reflect
those diagnosed with HIV. The heterosexual community is greatly
underserved and those infected were in isolation and denial, since
there was "NOWHERE TO GO." The need for emotional, educational
and social support were not met until T.C.P.C. came into existence.
We are a peer operated organization, primarily of volunteers, (with
1 paid staff member) run by HIV+ Heterosexuals & the affected
community. We rely on donations from our members & the community
to provide our services.
We are here to help you, we
know what you are going through, WE HAVE BEEN THERE. We understand
the pain and fear, how easy it is to hide and how difficult it can
be to come to terms with this disease and to reach out. We will
support, guide, empower, educate and listen to you and best of all
LOVE AND ACCEPT YOU!
